After receiving what I felt to be a less than satisfactory response from Argos in relation to my original query, I sent them another email.

It seems all Argos customer service queries are handled centrally; as each new query comes in, it is automatically issued with a unique customer reference number, and so I was a bit worried that this might lead to confusion. My original query was given the reference number ARG5040522X; when I sent a reply saying I wasn’t satisfied, that query was then issued with a new customer reference number, ARG5043100X (can it really be that Argos received two and a half thousand customer service queries in just the few hours between me emailing them yesterday morning and replying to their response a few hours later?).

Anyway, at around 10pm last night, I received another reply, this time from someone called Alice Lewis* (I imagine Adrian Hughes had gone home by this time, it was quite late):

Dear James,

Thank you for your e-mail regarding your enquiry.

I have looked into your enquiry and I can confirm that the information you have requested is business sensitive and is not disclosed to anyone outside of the company.

Should you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us at or call us on 0845 640 2020.

Alice Lewis
Argos Direct E-Commerce Customer Service Team.

For your reference the above reply is in reference to your earlier email ARG5043100X

Well, it’s quite clear what I have to do next. I have to get a job working at Argos Head Office. It’s the only way I’ll ever find the answer to my question.
